Dashboard Filters
Outline
When you select a dashboard, the available filters and their current values are listed across the top of the dashboard, under the dashboard name. These filters apply to all the reports shown on the dashboard.
Note: To hide the filters, click the hide filters icon in the dashboard’s top right corner. Click it again to redisplay the filters.
Use the available filters to dial in the dashboard to just the information you need. Keep in mind that reports only display 500 rows or less, so if you are drilling into a number that's higher than 500, your detailed results will be incomplete. Narrow your filters to display complete results.
Use Linked Filters
The available values for some filters are dependent on each other. For example, when you choose a value for the Panel Type filter, the options for the Panel Name filter are limited to only panels with the type you chose. It works the other way, too: Choosing a Panel Name filter value limits the Panel Type filter values to just the type of the panel you chose. When you choose a new filter value, a link icon appears in the Filters section next to all other filters whose available values have changed because of this choice.
Understand Date and Time Filter Options
All date filters on hc1 dashboards provide the same options. Understanding the nuances of these options is important so that you know what data is included or excluded when you apply a filter.
Absolute Filters
To compare the data shown in hc1 to other systems, we recommend choosing absolute date and time filters where you use the calendar control to set the filter value:
- For “is on the day” or “is in range” operators, click the calendar control. Use the arrows to change the month and click the day you want. Note that “is in range” includes data from the first and last days you specify.
- For “is before” or “is on or after” operators, choose absolute, and then click the calendar control.
- For “is in the year,” type the four-digit year in the box.
Relative Filters
When you are looking at recent trends, choose filters that are relative to the current date and time. These filters require choosing an operator, a numerical value, and a unit of time. Make sure to choose a unit of time that corresponds to the level of precision you need to answer your data question. Put another way, choosing 2 days will not return the same data as choosing 48 hours.
For the “is in the last” operator, type a numeral in the first box and choose a unit of time of the current date, so “is in the last 3 days” would include 2 days ago, yesterday, and today. To exclude partial units of time, choose the option that starts with complete, as in complete days. For example, “is in the last 3 complete days” would include 3 days ago, 2 days ago, and yesterday.
For “is this,” “is previous,” or “is next,” keep in mind that days, weeks, months, quarters, and years are measured according to the calendar:
- A week is a calendar unit that starts on Monday and ends on Sunday. Choosing the “is this week” filter would show 2 days’ worth of data if you did it on a Tuesday and 4 days’ worth of data if you did it on a Thursday. Choosing “is previous week” on Monday would return data from the most recent 7-day period (last Monday through yesterday), but choosing “is previous week” on Friday would return data from 11 days ago through 5 days ago (two Mondays ago through last Sunday).
- A month could be 28 days, 29 days, 30 days, or 31 days, depending on the year and time of year.
- Quarters start on January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1.
- This year is a range from January 1 of the current year up to the current date.
Running “is any time” is essentially no date filtering because it matches any value. This option is not recommended because your results are likely to be incomplete because the full results dataset is likely to exceed the maximum number of rows, depending on what other filters you have applied.
Change Filter Values
To change filter values:
- Click the box under the name of the filter you want to change. A small window opens with the controls for that filter.
- Choose an operator from the leftmost picklist.
- In the right-hand boxes, set a value by typing the name and choosing from the search results or using the other controls that appear when you set the operator. Note that value searches aren’t case-sensitive.
- To add alternate (OR statement) filter criteria, click + after the filter and choose an operator and filter value.
- Click anywhere outside the filter window to close it.
- Click the update button to update the dashboard with the new filter values. When the filters have finished updating, the icon will change to a reload button and display how long it has been since the filters were reloaded.
The update button changes to a cancel button while the dashboard updates. If you change your mind and want to keep the dashboard the way it was, click the x.
To remove or clear a value:
- Click the box under the name of the filter you want to change. A small window opens with the controls for that filter.
- Click X next to the value or OR statement you want to remove.
- Click the Update button.
To reset all dashboard filters to the default values right away, click the dashboard actions menu icon and choose Reset Filters. When you log out of hc1, all the filters are reset to their default values.
Use Saved Filters
You can use the Saved Filter Options menu to save, manage, and apply sets of filter values on a dashboard. Depending on which option you choose, different controls will be displayed. When you have finished using an option, you can hide the saved filter controls by clicking the Cancel button. If you just want to close search results, click outside the dashboard.
